Your Guide to Horse Art Gift Ideas - The Paintings of the Herring Family
quite a talented family in the world of horse art and paintings...
You can imagine the local art supply store proprieter's eyes lighting up at the mention of the name Herring; father, John Frederick Herring Sr.(1795-1868), mother, Anne Harris Herring, brother Benjamin, and sons, John Jr., Charles, and Benjamin, were all renowned painters in 19th-century England. John Frederick Herring began his career as a coachman. Consequently, paintings of horses and coaches are recurring themes in his works. His lithographic prints of coaching, racing and other horse art are classics. During his career, Herring worked for Queen Victoria and King George IV. His works are housed in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery, and other institutions.

John Frederick Herring's wife, Anne Harris, was also an accomplished painter and a member of the Society of Lady Artists. She exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1852 to 1866. The eldest son, John Jr., worked in both oil and watercolor. His oils are generally of greater interest and are at times confused with the works by his father. John Jr.'s wife Kate Rolfe also painted and exhibited at the Royal Academy, and at the Suffolk Street Galleries. Quite a talented family. John Jr., Benjamin, and Charles often collaborated with their father on paintings, particularly those of sporting scenes.
