He spent much of the next five years west of the Mississippi where he worked as a rancher, trapper, military scout and reporter. Both an artist and historian, Remington first became known in the art community from his drawings, which appeared regularly in Harpers's by 1886. Frederic Remington was an expert horseman, which is reflected in the quality of his art.
Perhaps the most popular magazine illustrator in the late 1880's, Remington produced more than 2700 magazine drawings and paintings over his career. His paintings focus almost entirely on the people of the west. It is noted that in most of his paintings, the landscape plays a minor role, often no role at all. The focus is on people, and of interest to us, horses.
