C. M. Russell In Without Knocking

"In Without Knocking"

Charles Marion Russell, perhaps better known as C. M. Russell or Charlie Russell, was born in Missouri in 1864, and travelled to Montana when he was 16.

His artistic skills developed while working as a cowhand and wrangler where he began sketching for the amusement of his companions.

As an artist, Russell was basically self-taught, his art matured year by year until at a point he took up painting full time, opening a studio in Great Falls, Montana.

Most of his adult life was spent in Great Falls, along the Rock Mountain Front, and in and around the Judith Basin, Russell Country as it is known in the Montana tour guides.

Up until his death in 1926, Charles Marion Russell produced a vast number of paintings showing the West of the 1880's, as well as producing a number of fine works of sculpture, for which he is equally famous.
